Area Memorial Day services announced

Several Memorial Day observances are scheduled in area communities next week, including Prairie du Chien, McGregor, Wauzeka and Bloomington-Glen Haven.

Prairie du Chien
The annual parade will commence at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 25. Marching units will proceed from the intersection of East Blackhawk Avenue and Michigan Street west to Beaumont Road and then south to the Ft. Crawford Military Cemetery. All marchers, including the PdC Honor Guard, Legionnaires, VFW members and all ex-servicemen, Legion and VFW Auxiliaries, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, patriotic organizations, school children carrying flowers and flags, Bluff View School band and the PdC High School band, are requested to assemble at the First Merit Bank parking lot on Michigan Street no later than 10:15 a.m. Monday.

The annual Memorial Day program at the cemetery will begin at about 10:45 a.m. It will include a Memorial Day address by retired Staff Sergeant Bob Randall, a rifle salute and taps by the PdC Honor Guard, invocation and closing prayers with Pastor Andy Doll, of the Bible Baptist Church, a flag raising ceremony by the Boy Scouts, the Pledge of Allegiance by the Girl Scouts, musical selections by the Prairie du Chien High School band, the Gettysburg Address and a reading of “In Flanders Fields.”

In the event of inclement weather, the Memorial Day program will be held at Bluff View School.

After the program at Ft. Crawford Military Cemetery, the PdC Honor Guard will visit all cemeteries and the veterans memorials at the courthouse and Old Rock School.

McGregor
McGregor Memorial Day events will be held Monday, May 25. The day will begin at 9 a.m., when veterans are asked to report to the Legion Hall. At 9:30 a.m., a memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The parade will leave the school and head down Main Street, to the riverfront, beginning at 10 a.m.

At 10:30 a.m., a riverfront memorial service will be held, honoring those lost at sea. From there, those who wish to attend can head to the Memorial Day program at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, which will begin at 11 a.m.

Marquette native Jim Hunter, who served for 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, will speak at the ceremony. An open house for the Hunters will be held Friday, May 22, from 3 to 8 p.m., at 316 Prospect Street, in McGregor, so they can meet old and new friends.

Wauzeka
On Sunday, May 24, an ecumenical luminary candle lighting service will take place at the Wauzeka Cemetery at 8 p.m.

The Memorial Day parade will be held on Monday, May 25 at 9:30 a.m. Lineup begins at 9 a.m. at the Village Park. Businesses are encouraged to participate. Are you someone who has served or is serving? Please consider marching in the parade.

The Memorial Day program, hosted by the Wauzeka Legion and Wauzeka-Steuben Schools, is planned immediately following the parade, around 10 a.m., in the Doll Gym. A highlight of the program will be presentations by the fourth and fifth grade winners of the Legion Auxiliary Americanism Essay Contest.

A chicken dinner, sponsored by the Wauzeka Lions Club, will follow at the Village Park. Ball games are also held at the park all weekend.

Bloomington-Glen Haven
The Bloomington-Glen Haven American Legion Memorial Day ceremonies will be observed Monday, May 25. All veterans, civic groups and children are urged to participate.

Memorial services for outlying cemeteries are held in the morning as follows: 8 a.m.—Blake’s Prairie, 8:15—Lumpkin, 8:30—Scott, 8:45–Goeckel, 9:00—Glen Haven levee, 10:00—Charlotte, 10:15—Ramsey, 10:45—Dodge, 11:00—Providence. At 11:30, the American Legion will lead the parade from the Bloomington firehouse through Main Street and into the Bloomington cemetery at 11:30. The River Ridge band will perform at the Glen Haven levee and the Bloomington cemetery.

A picnic lunch for all veterans and their families will happen at the Bloomington Community Park following all ceremonies. If there is inclement weather, the picnic will be held in the Legion Hall.
