Port Edwards defeated host Seneca/Wauzeka-Steuben 34-12 in a nonconference football game Friday night.
Jared Payne scored on a 45-yard run to get the Blue-Golds on the board first 6-0 in the first quarter. Port Edwards scored on a 10-yard pass to tie the game at 6-6. Port Edwards scored again on a 3-yard run to go up 12-6 after one period.
Port Edwards scored on a 74-yard pass and a 2-point play to increase the lead to 20-6 in the second quarter. Port Edwards scored on a 45-yard pass to go up 26-6. Brady Fernette ran it in from 3 yards out to pull SWS to within 26-12 at the half.
Neither team scored in the third period.
Port Edwards finished the scoring for the night with a 7-yard run and a 2-point conversion in the fourth period to make the final score 34-12.
Port Edwards had 13 first downs in the contest. SWS had 11 first downs. Port Edwards had 172 yards rushing and 165 passing. SWS had 177 rushing and 26 passing.
Fernette rushed 13 times for 74 yards for the Blue-Golds. Payne had 65 yards on 17 carries. Payne was 3 of 7 passing for 26 yards. Noah Allan caught 2 passes for 22 yards. Tyler Zach caught 1 pass for 4 yards.
“Port Edwards’ Ethan Saylor had a big game against us. We had a few penalties on crucial plays where we needed a first down,” said SWS Coach Justin Goodrich. “The team played with good effort and intensity, but we were not able to overcome the numerous turnovers and penalties.”
