Blackhawks’ defense secures homecoming victory

By Zach Mara

Another homecoming game would bring another act of heroics by the Blackhawks’ defense. The Dodgeville Dodgers were marching down, looking to tie the game when, just like last years’ homecoming game, the Hawks forced a fumble in the end zone. Senior Chad Mara forced a fumble after a 28-yard catch-and-run to the Dodgers’ (0-5, 0-2) wide receiver. Hawks’ (3-2, 2-0) LB Ethan Swiggum fell on the ball at the 10-yard line and sealed the 35-28 homecoming victory.

The game began with the Dodgers striking first on a 74-yard touchdown pass on their first play of the game after a Hawks’ punt. The Hawks would respond with a 7-play, 56-yard drive, highlighted by a 16-yard pass from Brogan Potter to Casey Hogenson down to the 10-yard line. Peyton Hall would cap the drive with a TD run from the 1-yard line. After the good PAT, the score was tied at 7. Dodgeville, however, would once again strike quickly. On the third play of their next drive, QB Jordan Larson threw a 71-yard touchdown, giving Dodgeville a 14-7 lead. The Hawks would prove their relentlessness on their next drive, as Brogan Potter would pass for 56 yards, including the 25-yard TD to Peyton Hall. The extra point was blocked, but the lead shrunk to 14-13.

The next drive had everyone believing that Dodgeville was unstoppable as they got down to the 4-yard line in just 2 plays. The Hawks’ defense would stiffen, however, and 3 plays later, on fourth and goal from the 22-yard line, Hunter Sheckler, Peyton Hall, and Gunnar Kravchuk would combine for a sack, giving Prairie the ball at the 27-yard line. Nearing halftime, the Hawks’ Casey Hogenson would field a Dodgeville punt at the 42-yard line and outrun the defense into the end zone. Dylan Yeomans ran in the 2-point attempt, and the Hawks took a 21-14 lead into halftime.

Following a Dodgeville punt on the first drive of the second half, the Hawks would extend their lead after 11 plays and 54 yards on a QB keeper from Potter. During the drive, the Hawks executed a perfect fake punt on fourth and 9 as Potter passed the ball to Peyton Hall who got just far enough to extend the drive. The kick was once again blocked, but the lead had increased to 27-14. On fourth down from the PdC 36, Larson threw a long pass that was intercepted by Casey Hogenson at the 10-yard line. The Hawks couldn’t capitalize, however, as they were forced to punt the ball back to the Dodgers. Three plays later, they were in the end zone, narrowing the lead to 27-21 after the 1-yard TD run and extra point. The Dodgers stopped the Hawks and found the end zone again on their next drive, taking the lead 28-27. The Hawks drove to the Dodgeville 28-yard line, where on fourth and 6, Potter’s pass was broken up with 3:36 to go.

With a homecoming victory on the line, the Hawks’ defense would force a much-needed 3-and-out, and give the offense the ball with 2:24 remaining. The offense, rejuvenated by the defensive stand, drove 73 yards on 6 plays, highlighted by a 22-yard scramble by Potter and a 29-yard pass to Drew Scott. Potter ended the drive with a pass to a wide open Peyton Hall, who took the ball into the end zone from 16 yards out. Cody Cauffman ran in the 2-point conversion, and the Hawks led 35-28 with 42 seconds to go. After a 22-yard hook-and-ladder put the ball at the PdC 38-yard line, everyone was on their feet, and 2 plays later Larson hit WR Jordan Olson down the middle of the field. He ran the ball to the 10-yard line, where Mara forced the fumble to secure the win. Potter knelt the ball and the game ended at 35-28.

Potter was 11-25 in the air for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns. Hogenson caught 3 passes for 58 yards. Scott had 2 receptions for 42 yards, and Cody Cauffman had 1 for 19 yards. Hall had 3 receptions for 50 yards and 2 touchdowns to go along with 47 rushing yards and a TD on 12 carries. Dylan Yeomans had 12 rushes for 48 yards. Dominic Wright had 5 carries for 23 yards, and Potter netted 22 yards and a touchdown on 7 runs.
