Lola Mae Shinko
Lola Mae Shinko, 94, of Platteville passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Feb. 12, at the Epione Pavillion in Cuba City.
She was born May 6, 1921 in Lynxville, the daughter of Charles and Alice (Caya) Bright. Lola Mae was a 1939 graduate of Seneca High School. She married Thomas Shinko on Jan. 3, 1940 in Einfield, Ill. Tom preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1995. Together they owned and operated Shinko’s General Merchandise in Eastman, throughout the 1940s and 50s. Lola Mae, “Ma,” loved life and people, especially children. Growing up, the doors of our family home were always open to all of our friends, many who affectionately called her “Ma.” She was always ready to share a home-cooked meal, a good joke, or an animated game of cards. She was a lifetime member of the Big River Long Rifles Club. She looked forward to seeing her Rendezvous family every year, never missing a single one.
She also loved the 4th of July, church picnic, and Firemen’s hog roast. She enjoyed any event which brought family and friends together in her beloved Eastman. She had no shortage of friends and neighbors with whom she loved to visit. She loved to cook, bake, eat and be merry. She was always ready to have a good time and was “the life of the party.” She often said she was lucky she had such a wonderful life, but we were the lucky ones to have her in our lives. She mastered the art of “the joy of living,” and we will always remember the love, laughter, strength, and happiness she shared with all of us. She was one special lady who will be missed and loved forever– “Until we rendezvous again.”
She is survived by her sons, Ronald and Tom (Ellen); and her daughters, Mary (Ivan) Doering and Sue (Mike) Curtis; her grandchildren Shawn, Shane, Scott, Niki, Mindy, Adam and Alison; along with her great grandchildren, Sidney, Tyler, Jacob, Lola, Caya, Ethan and Logan. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son Charles; a brother Jerry Bright; a sister Sis Miller; and grandchildren, Carol and Ashley.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial for will be Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Eastman, with inurnment in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday, April 16 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
