Leona “Fern” Fischer, 96, of Garnavillo, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, after short illness.
Visitation was Thursday, Feb. 25, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, and one hour before services at the church.
Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 26, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo.
Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.
Fern was born the daughter of Westly and Ella Mae (Stillinger) Palmer on April 8, 1919, on the family farm near Millville.
Fern received her education from the Hunter Country School, farmed with her family and was a homemaker for many years. Fern married Lyle Fischer on Sept. 19, 1937, in Dubuque. Fern and Lyle moved to Garnavillo in 1976. They were members of Peace Church in Clayton, later members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. Lyle died in 1991. Fern remained in her home until Dec. 3, 2005, when her new home became the Tower Living Center in Garnavillo. Fern enjoyed cooking and baking for the family. She was a pro at making hamburger buns, sour cream and raisin pie and potato salad. Her other interests were quilting with her Homemakers Club members, and she loved the community of Garnavillo where the family gathered on the 4th of July for Garny’s big day. At the Tower Center she spent hours playing cards and loved the Brewers baseball team and a friend, Al, who harassed her as he was a Cubs fan.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty (Sheldon) Davis of Delhi, Fonda Dahling of Elkader, and Judy (Merlin) Torrey of Guttenberg; one son, Roger (Debby) Fischer of Garnavillo; 10 grandchildren, Heather (Mike) Murphy, Elliott, and Austin (Cathy) Fischer, Lynnette and Michelle Torrey, Glenda and Shelly Davis, Michael (Kim) Dahling, Pamela (Dana) Dettbarn and Chad Dahling; five great-grandchildren, Lynn, Alex, Robyn, Vance, and Royce; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
