Seneca/Wauzeka-Steuben beat Ithaca 21-6 in Seneca’s homecoming game on a rainy Friday night to grab first place in the Ridge and Valley Conference.
The Blue-Golds improved to 7-1 on the season and 5-0 in the Ridge and Valley. The Bulldogs fell to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in conference action. If SWS wins against visiting Riverdale in Wauzeka on Oct. 13, they will be the sole conference champions.
Noah Allan broke away for a 79-yard touchdown run and the extra point was good as SWS took a 7-0 lead in the second period.
Ithaca scored on a 2-yard run and the 2-point conversion was no good as the Bulldogs pulled to within 7-6 at the half.
Allan ran it in from 46 yards out and the PAT was good as the Blue-Golds increased the margin to 14-6 in the fourth quarter.
Nate Benish had a 15-yard TD run and the extra point was good to make the final score, 21-6 as the Blue-Golds handed the Bulldogs their first conference loss.
“This was an outstanding win against a very tough Ithaca team. At times, the weather was very tough to play in, but our guys played with a lot of heart, intensity and focus,” said SWS Coach Justin Goodrich. “They weren’t going to let anything get in their way with the conference title on the line. Ball security was a huge key to this game. We were able to win the turnover battle, which helped immensely. These young men continue to make strides every week and they are so much fun to watch on the field.”
SWS had 312 yards rushing on 42 attempts. Ithaca had 174 yards on 40 carries. Ithaca had 64 yards passing. SWS had no yards through the air.
Allan rushed 13 times for 172 yards and 2 TDs. Jared Payne had 16 carries for 86 yards.
