Larene Anna Backhaus, 98, of Guttenberg, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2017, at the Guttenberg Care Center, where she had resided since November 2005.

Funeral services were Friday, Dec. 29, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Harold McMillin. Visitation was before services at the funeral home.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Larene was born on April 29, 1919, in rural Garnavillo, the daughter of Harvey and Lizzie (Schroeder) Backhaus.

Larene was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, and during her adult years was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. Larene received her education locally and graduated from the Garnavillo High School. After high school, Larene worked beside her parents on the family farm and later in life, she worked at the pharmacy in Guttenberg. Larene had a tremendous passion for cats and enjoyed their company. She also liked to read, crochet, go to auctions and collect primitive antiques. Larene was a member of the Clayton County Genealogical Society and volunteered numerous hours at the Guttenberg Public Library. She also spent countless hours compiling her family’s genealogy. Larene is remembered by family for her German potato salad and pecan tassies. 

Larene is survived by her relatives and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to either St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg or the Guttenberg Public Library.
