Mary Jane Francis (Meyer) Steger, 89, of Elkport, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader surrounded by her family.

Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 11, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Marvin Bries.

Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Littleport.

Mary Jane was born on Nov. 7, 1928, in Dyersville, the daughter of Leo and Loretta (Weber) Meyer.

Mary Jane attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic School and was later united in marriage with Harold Steger on Aug. 30, 1949, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville. This union blessed the couple with 15 children. Together Harold and Mary Jane lived in Cascade for about a year before beginning farming near Earlville in 1952. After 10 years they moved north of Manchester where they farmed until 1976. They later moved to Littleport and farmed there until they retired from farming in 1994. They moved to Elkport where Mary Jane resided until her death. Mary Jane enjoyed gardening, photography, quilting, baking, fishing and sewing. Most of all, she enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Mary Jane was strong in her beliefs and family and faith meant everything to her.

Mary Jane is survived by her husband of 68 years, Harold Steger; children, Mary Lou (John) Robinson, Linda (Al) Bestler, Gary (Karon) Steger, Jim (Joan) Steger, Steve (Pam) Steger, Tom (Connie) Steger, Bonnie Steger, Mike (Beth) Steger, Lori (Victor) Pugh, Loras (Lisa) Steger, Deb (Roger) Worm, Alan (Amy) Steger, Don Steger, Dave (Tracey) Steger, and Amy (Keith) Gaul; 58 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Betty (Stanley) McLane, Jim (Sheila) Meyer, Joyce (Ron) Drey, Ken (Kathy) Meyer, Janice (Ron) Alfred; in-laws, Don (Margie) Deshaw, Jo Steger, Pat Meyer, Dorothy Meyer, Helen Meyer and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ann Meyer in infancy; and three brothers, Don, Loras and Richard Meyer.
