Germaine L. Weyant

Germaine Lorraine Weyant, 93, of Guttenberg, died Monday, June 11, 2018, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Funeral services were Thursday, June 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Germaine was born on May 18, 1925, on a farm southeast of Dyersville to Ed and Marie (Helle) Nieland. She grew up with four brothers and four sisters. The family moved to Guttenberg and Germaine attended school at St. Mary’s. She finished school at eighth grade to take care of her mother, who was sick. Germaine worked at several jobs including the canning factory, egg plant and Montgomery Ward’s in Dubuque, where she met her husband, Robert Weyant. The couple married on Feb. 28, 1949, and moved to Strawberry Point, where Robert worked in a creamery as a butter maker and Germaine worked at printing butter, which means wrapping it in paper and packing in boxes. 

The couple had many nieces and nephews that helped and were great, and still are. They moved around a lot; to Osterdock, where they also ran a variety store, to Petersburg and to Millville, always working in a creamery. After the creamery closed in Millville they moved to Luxemburg where Bob was a field man for AMPI, while Germaine worked at Ertl’s. The couple moved to Guttenberg in 1979. After Bob died on May 21, 1984, Germaine went to work serving hot lunches at St. Mary’s School for 11 years. Germaine and Bob loved to travel and went to all the states except the New England states. Germaine loved to gamble and play cards every chance she had. She had a passion for socializing and eating out and was a dedicated member of the Red Hat Society. 

Germaine is survived by her very special nieces and nephew, Joyce (Steve) Voss, Carl (Sue) Overbeck, Mary (Ross) Abbott, Jan Overbeck and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers and four sisters and two nephews, Bill and Bob Overbeck.
