Betty Ione Puffett
Betty Ione Puffett, 88, of Volga , Iowa, died Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on October 24, 1930, in Oelwein, the daughter of Glen and Beulah (Sloan) Oldfather, Betty attended country school and went to Volga School until she graduated with the Class of 1948. She received her teaching certificate from Upper Iowa.
Betty was united in marriage to Melvyn Wayne Puffett on December 30, 1950. They adopted a daughter, Artella, on July 21, 1955. Together they made their home in Volga.
Betty was an active member of the Volga United Methodist Church. She was president of the United Methodist Women, taught adult Sunday school, and children’s Sunday school. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 55 years.
Betty owned Puffett and Scotty Upholstery shop for many years, clerked many sales for her husband and worked at the Volga Opera House until May 1999.
Family was the most important thing in her life. Betty also enjoyed going to sales with her husband, reading books, and traveling with her daughter and family.
Survivors include her daughter, Artella (Leslie Wayne) Coonfare of Volga; three grandchildren, Lillian Connfare, Leon (Nicole) Coonfare, and Jericho (Tammy) Coonfare; several great-grandchildren, Michael Mastin, Logan Putz, Tyler Alber, Nathan Coofare Lockard, Zoe Strawn, Riglee Coonfare, and Holden Coonfare; a sister, Joyce (Brian) Notch of Arizona; a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Johnny) Feulner of Lamont; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Beulah Oldfather; her husband, Melvyn Puffett in 1987; a brother, Raymond Oldfather; a sister, Ruth Fox; and a niece, Kathy Chapman.
The family would like to thank the St. Croix Hospice team for their wonderful care.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 22, 2019, at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church, Volga, with Pastors Joan Thomas and Isaac Gilana officiating. Music will be provided by Joan Thomas, Irene Stocks and Elaine Follon. Honorary casket bearers will be Dena Puffett, Gene Fox, Tom Badin, Leo Buckley, Jay Taylor, Brooke Alber and Mike Knipper. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery, Volga.
