One team, one athlete and Courier Press named to Prairie du Chien Athletic Hall of Fame

The 1982-83 girls basketball team, Shelly Howe and the Courier Press were named to the Prairie du Chien Athletic Hall of Fame during an induction ceremony at halftime of Friday night’s Prairie du Chien football game versus River Valley.
1982-83 Girls
Basketball Team
During the 1982-1983 girls basketball season, there was no such thing as a 3-point line and the girls played four eight-minute quarters. These hindrances, however, did not stop this team from having an outstanding season. Many records were set, including being SWAL Conference champions and regional champions. This team was the first girls basketball team in Prairie du Chien history to go undefeated in SWAL play at 12-0, and the first girls team in Prairie du Chien to go undefeated in the regular season with a record of 17-0. They had a continuous wins in a row record of 21 games. They hold the record of highest girls basketball score in a game with 111 points. This team also set a new SWAL record of average points in a game of 67. The old record was 53.
Members of this outstanding team include Coach Barb Krieger, Bridget Campbell Keepers, Cindy Sheckler Williams, Lisa Kozelka Dyer, Linda Kozelka Heal, Jill Pitzer Tancil, Liz Bushnell Bremmer, Diane Luster Morovits, Jane Greenwald Kluesner, Kim Hanson Burlage and Michele Kozelka Pattison.
Shelly Howe - Athlete
Shelly Howe graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1992 after playing volleyball, basketball and softball for the Blackhawks.
Her honors and awards include being part of the 1991 girls basketball state championship team and being inducted into the Prairie du Chien Hall of Fame as a team member of the 1990-1991 girls basketball team in 2008.
This Prairie du Chien alumna attended Coe College where she holds records as the all-time leading scorer in basketball; all-time leader of 3-point goals; all-time season stolen bases record in softball: Outstanding Athlete Award in 1996 and inductee into the 2010 Hall of Fame at Coe College.
Currently, she is an assistant special agent in charge for the Drug Enforcement Administration in San Diego, Calif.

The Courier Press newspaper has been serving Prairie du Chien and surrounding area for over 171 years. For 108 of those years, spanning four generations, the Howe family has owned this vital part of the Prairie du Chien and surrounding communities.
Recognizing the important community role played by its schools, the Courier Press strives to keep the communities it serves informed of school happenings and events. Coverage of sporting events in school districts has been an important aspect of the newspaper during its many years on the sidelines of these events. Gary Howe, along with other staff members, has been brought into the game more times than perhaps was wanted. As reluctant participants in the game, they were shoved, tripped, tackled, and pummeled with a wide assortment of balls and athletes, all while working to get that all important play on film.
“Taking one for the team” was just part of the game.
