The school district of Wauzeka-Steuben will be holding an informational meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s All-Purpose Room. All residents and parents of the district are encouraged to come learn the facts about the referendum effort, and to ask questions they may have about the referendum.

Last month, the Wauzeka-Steuben Board of Education approved measures to seek a three-year operational referendum, with the question posed on the Tuesday, April 7 election ballot. The district is seeking voter approval to exceed revenue limits by $240,000 in 2020-21, by $316,000 in 2021-22, and by $398,000 in 2022-23.

Interim District Administrator Dave Alexander said that resulting tax rate for the term of the referendum would take the mill rate to $12.71, and remain at that rate for three years.

“It was imperative to the board of education to seek sufficient revenues to keep the school operating, and at the same time be conscientious to the tax payers in the district,” he said. “The $12.71 tax rate is the same as it was in the 2018-19 school year.”

The revenues generated from the referendum will be used to sustain current educational programs, staffing and maintaining the facilities of the district. A series of years with declining student enrollment has caused the funding for the school to fall below levels necessary to keep operations going as they currently are.

In addition to the February referendum information meeting, the district plans to hold another meeting in March, at a time and place to be determined. More information about the Wauzeka-Steuben School referendum can be found on the school’s website at www.wauzeka.k12.wi.us.
