He was baptized June 7, 1936, and confirmed on April 10, 1949, by Rev. Kitterer, at E&R Church in Elkader. Leon attended Denmark Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Elkader High School in 1954. He lived and worked all his life on the family farm at 22248 Highway 13, near St. Olaf.

He liked to play cards and spend time with family. Leon served on the Read Township Board of Trustees and was a member of Peace United Church of Christ.
