A 60-year-old Prairie du Chien woman has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence (fourth offense).

Carol Lynn Bartol-Byers faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a concerned citizen told a Prairie du Chien police officer there was a vehicle that had been swerving all over the road and had just pulled into the Wal-Mart parking lot. The officer located the vehicle and observed it drive to an adjacent parking lot and then to the Crossing Rivers Clinic where it stopped.

The officer then approached the vehicle and smelled a moderate odor of intoxicants and a strong odor of perfume, the complaint said. Bartol-Byers performed poorly on field sobriety tests, had slurred speech and had trouble maintaining her balance. A preliminary breath sample gave a reading of .132 blood alcohol content. Numerous cans of beer, some of which were still cold; along with what appeared to be several mixed drinks in Gatorade bottles, which were still cold, were found in her vehicle, according to the complaint.

Bartol-Byers was previously convicted of OWI in 1990, 2008 and 2011.
