Wauzeka-Steuben will have spring football
By Ted Pennekamp
During a special school board meeting on Aug. 26, the Wauzeka-Steuben board elected to move its football season to compete in the spring window created by the WIAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“After considering options to play this fall, those options were rejected for several reasons,” said Wauzeka-Steuben District Administrator Dave Alexander after the meeting. “If Wauzeka-Steuben went on its own to try and compete in an 11-man team conference, there were significant concerns for player safety. Competing as an 8-man team was also considered, but rejected too. Citing not enough time to prepare for 8-man rules, and a lack of 8-man teams to play in the fall were the main concerns.
Wauzeka-Steuben coaches, the athletic director, administration and board greatly value the co-op relationship with Seneca, and also didn’t want to take measures that might damage the future of that relationship. So, we will look to hopefully play a five-game season in the spring against other regional teams, as the Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben Blue-Golds.”
Wauzeka-Steuben will have volleyball and cross country this fall. Wauzeka-Steuben has been part of a football co-op with Seneca for the past several years.
Seneca opted to have all of their fall sports in the spring.
