MFL MarMac snags win over Turkey Valley

The MFL MarMac girls basketball team kicked off its season Dec. 1, snagging a 46-38 victory at Turkey Valley. 

The Bulldogs led the Trojans 8-5 through the first quarter, then broke it open in the second, going on an 18-4 run to claim a 26-9 halftime advantage. Turkey Valley cut into the lead in the third quarter, though, making it 35-25. The Trojans also out-scored the Bulldogs 13-11 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit, losing by eight points.

Junior Riley Moreland had a huge night for MFL MarMac, unloading 24 points. She shot a stellar 57.1 percent from the field, making eight of 14 attempts. Junior Miranda Lang added 10 points, while sophomore Brooklynn Moon drained two three-point shots to finish the game with six points. Senior Kayden Gillitzer totaled five points.

Junior Lakota Morrissey was the Bulldogs’ assist leader, with three, followed by Lang with two.

The Bulldogs dominated both the offensive and defensive boards in the game, out-rebounding the Trojans 47-24. Moreland had 16 of those, giving her a double-double, and Gillitzer had 14. Junior Carlie Jones snagged eight rebounds, and Lang and Moon each had three.

Defensively, MFL MarMac also grabbed seven steals—two apiece from Moreland, Lang and Gillitzer. Moreland had two of the team’s three blocks, while Morrissey picked up one.

The Bulldogs have a busy schedule this week. It started with a home match-up against Edgewood-Colesburg on Dec. 7, followed by a game at South Winneshiek on Dec. 8. The team will host West Central on Friday, Dec. 11, then wrap it up with Jesup on Saturday, Dec. 12.
