David Pont, 84, of Guttenberg, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2020, at Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg.

Because of the current COVID-19 restrictions there will be a private family service and burial.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Dave was born on Oct. 15, 1936, in Atlantic, the only son of Jethro and Helen (Mountain) Pont. He graduated from the Cumberland High School with the class of 1954. On March 10, 1968, Dave married the love of his life, Donna Marie Junk in Waterloo. To this union three children were born.

Dave worked for John Deere for 34 years where he was a tool maker, after he retired Dave spent many years driving school bus for Guttenberg School District as well as he drove truck for Kann Manufacturing.

Dave enjoyed many hobbies. While living in Waterloo he was a Scout Master. He enjoyed having coffee with the neighbors, attending and participating in church at Nazarath and helping the boys with pinewood derby cars.

After moving to Guttenberg he spent as much time as he could on the river fishing and passing his knowledge down to his grandkids about all of the good fishing holes and the right baits to use for the right fish. He spent a lot of time sitting on the deck watching and documenting the barges as they went up and down the river in his barge book. He did the same thing with all of the random birds that frequented his bird feeders. As they would come and go, he would identify them in his bird book and write the dates of when he saw them. He also devoted a lot of time to making sure he had enough ears of corn to feed the flying squirrels. He shared this evening event with all of the campers and family members and friends that would be at the house at dusk. He loved gardening and growing his tomatoes. He enjoyed making fried green tomatoes and preparing the fish at the fish fry for the Mountain Family Reunion in Colorado every year. He spent a lot of time tinkering in the garage and going for “put put” rides. He led our family in prayer for holiday dinners after he was done carving the ham and turkey.

He was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg and served as an usher and greeter for many years. He enjoyed attending sporting events and arguing with the refs. He was our husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, but most importantly he was our voice of reason, our comforter and our rock.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Donna; sons, Brian (Val) Pont, Marty (Brandi) Pont; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Schuler, and Rita Rohde; plus many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Lee Ann Rice.
