It was a hard week for the Central girls basketball team, dropping the first two games to cap a three-game losing streak, before getting off the snide with a victory over South Winneshiek Friday night.

The week started against Central City, where the Warriors lost 48-36, scoring over seven points in only one quarter of the game. Delaney Scherf led the team with 11 points, while Hannah Asche had a nice game with nine points. Haley Frieden contributed eight points, Carly Kluesner had four and Lexi Loan and Madison Sylvester each had two.

Rebounding was a major concern in this game. Central City hit the offensive glass well and had 14 second-chance points. Carly Kluesner led the team with five rebounds.

“We were out rebounded by seven rebounds as a team, but the amount of offensive rebounds we gave up was a key to the game,” coach Mark Wiley said.

Additionally, Delaney Scherf and Frieden each had two steals in the game, while Fern Diersen, Carly Kluesner and Abby Cummer each had one steal. Asche and Delaney Scherf each dished out two assists, and Frieden and Grace Kuehl had one assist apiece.

“We did not take care of the basketball as a team, which led to 26 Central City points off 21 turnovers. This was the other major key to us coming up on the wrong end of this game,” Wiley said.

Things only got worse against Turkey Valley, which the Warriors lost to 51-23, never scoring more than eight points in a quarter. Delaney Scherf led the team with nine points in the game, Carly Kluesner had four and teammates Cummer, Loan, Kuehl and Sylvester had two points each.

“The relentless pressure of Turkey Valley rattled us on the offensive end. They did a great job of closing gaps of our driving lanes and their help defense is stellar,” Wiley explained.

Cummer led the team with five rebounds, while Asche, Frieden, Diersen, Loan and Kuehl all had three.

Delaney Scherf grabbed four steals in the game, while Ashlyn Scherf and Carly Kluesner had one steal each.

“As a team, we did a better job of rebounding, but Turkey Valley shot the basketball well at 43 percent on the night. The high percentage was partly due to our turnovers in the third and fourth quarter that led to easy layups for Turkey Valley,” Wiley said. “Turkey Valley also took care of the basketball with only 14 turnovers in the game and we didn’t handle the basketball like we are capable of doing and, unfortunately, we shot just 28 percent from the field. That combination makes it tough to be successful in the assist category.”

In the final game of the week, the Warriors snapped their three-game losing streak with a hard-fought 43-26 win against South Winneshiek. Delaney Scherf led the team in the scoring category with 11 points, Asche had eight points and Carly Kluesner and Kuehl each had four points in the game. Frieden, Cummer and Ashlyn Scherf all totaled three points, while Diersen, Kaitlyn Wiley, and Loan each had two.

“It was nice to see 11 different players in the scoring category. We built a 20-point lead early midway through the third quarter,” Wiley said.

Frieden led the team in rebounding with eight boards. Delaney Scherf had five rebounds.

“Again, not a great showing in the rebounding category. It’s an area we have to continue to get better at and be strong with the basketball once we do get the rebound,” Wiley admitted.

A couple areas the team did excel in were limiting turnovers, getting steals and dishing the basketball to open teammates. The Warriors also committed a season-low 12 turnovers, while forcing 19 steals in the game.

Delaney Scherf had a career-high 11 steals, while Frieden and Carly Kluesner each had two steals.

Frieden had a career-high five assists in the game, Delaney Scherf had three and Asche and Carly Kluesner had two apiece.

“Thirteen assists on 19 made field goals is a good recipe for success. With some adjustments on the offensive end, we did a nice job of finding openings against South Winn’s zone defense,” Wiley said.

The Warriors next see action on Dec. 22, when they go on the road to MFL MarMac.
