The MFL MarMac wrestling team continued its dominance in duals on Jan. 21, with three more victories in a quadrangular at North Linn.

“We had some good falls and good six-minute matches—some on the winning side and some on the losing side,” said head coach Chet Bachman. “It was some good mat time.”

The Bulldogs defeated the host team 54-33, propelled by Logan Brown (220 pounds), Andrew Heins (126), Karter Decker (138) and Gabe McGeough (160), who all picked up falls. Jacob Trudo (285), Koal Klenk (106), Konnor Barat-Klimesh (113) and Kashton Mathis (145) won their matches due to forfeit.

At 120 pounds, Holden Mathis came out on the wrong end of an 11-3 major decision and Bryce Radloff lost 19-4 by technical fall at 132 pounds. Austin Nickolai (170), Michael Knickerbocker (182), Taylor Herzmann (195) and Tristen Koehn (152) were pinned in their matches.

Against Midland, MFL MarMac won 52-21. Picking up falls in the dual were Heins, Koehn and Klenk, while Decker scored an 8-0 major decision victory and Holden Mathis topped his opponent 7-0. Brown earned a win by tie breaker. Forfeit victories went to McGeough, Trudo, Barat-Klimesh and Radloff.

Haylee Guyer lost her 170-pound match by fall, and Collin Henkels and Nolan Lerch were pinned at 182 and 195, respectively.

The dual against Alburnett was the Bulldogs’ toughest of the night, but they pulled it out 43-28.

“Alburnett was really gunning for us, and had us on the ropes,” Bachman said.

MFL MarMac was led by McGeough, this time wrestling at 170 pounds, as well as Trudo, Decker, Koehn and Austin Schlee (160), who all won via fall.

“Those sealed the deal,” Bachman said.

Holden Mathis won a 5-2 decision and Radloff a 10-2 major decision, while Klenk earned a victory due to fall.

Barat-Klimesh lost a tough match, 9-5, and Heins was defeated by 9-2 decision. Brown was on the wrong end of a 10-0 major decision, while Knickerbocker, Herzmann and Kashton Mathis were all pinned.

The duals were MFL MarMac’s only competition last week. Bachman said it was nice to have a weekend off, without a tournament, as it gave the wrestlers time to prepare for postseason action.

“You don’t want to force anything right now. Just continue to be smart about your health,” he noted.

But first, the Bulldogs will host a dual meet on Thursday, Jan. 28, then head to the Upper Iowa Conference Tournament at Central on Saturday, Jan. 30.

Bachman hopes to see strong competition at conference.

“But I don’t know what some teams are going to do,” he admitted. “Some are opting out or holding their best competition out so they don’t get COVID. They’re protecting them for state, so this might be the last thing on the ladder.”
