The MFL MarMac girls basketball team scored easy wins over South Winneshiek and West Central last week, snapping an uncharacteristic two-game losing skid.

The Bulldogs took on South Winn Jan. 19, cruising to a 46-25 final. The MFL MarMac defense held the Warriors to eight points or fewer in each quarter and snagged 14 steals—half of them coming from the duo of Riley Moreland and Kayden Gillitzer.

Despite shooting just under 30 percent from the field, the Bulldogs managed to do enough offensively. Moreland was the team’s scoring leader, with 13 points. Her stat line also included seven rebounds and a block. Miranda Lang chipped in nine points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals, while Gillitzer had seven points, seven rebounds, an assist and a block. Mackenzy Ruff finished the night with five points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Carlie Jones added four points and two rebounds off the bench.

MFL MarMac continued to dominate Jan. 22, in a 50-28 victory at West Central. The Blue Devils hung in the game early, trailing just 9-5 after the first quarter, but the Bulldogs created some separation in the second period, going into the break leading 23-12. They then went on a 19-7 run to start the second half, en route to a 22-point win.

The Bulldog defense continued to perform well, nabbing 16 steals and four blocks. The offense also stepped up its game, improving its field goal percentage to 34.7. MFL MarMac made seven of 22 attempts from behind the arc.

Two of those three-pointers came from Lang, who led the Bulldogs with 17 points. She also picked up three rebounds, three steals and an assist. Gillitzer drained two of her six shots from behind the arc, and finished the night with nine points. She had three rebounds and three steals, as well. Jones offered a spark off the bench, with seven points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Brooklynn Moon had a good game of the bench, too, with six points, four steals, two rebounds and an assist.

The wins bumped the team to 10-4 overall and 9-2 in the Upper Iowa Conference standings.

MFL MarMac will be busy with three games this week. The Bulldogs will host Kee on Tuesday, Jan. 26, then Postville on Friday, Jan. 29. Crestwood will come to Monona on Saturday, Jan. 30.
