Elizabeth A. “Bette” Mayer, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2021, a day short of her 92nd birthday at the Prairie Maison Center in Prairie du Chien.

She was born in Highland, on March 7, 1929, the youngest daughter of Albert and Angela (Hebgen) Johanning. Bette married Maurice J. Mayer on Sept. 25, 1954, and started their married life in Prairie du Chien. Bette taught first grade starting at Patch Grove, and later for more than 30 years at Garnavillo Community Schools in Iowa. Bette enjoyed family and people. She enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre and bridge. She also enjoyed playing a good game of Scrabble. She enjoyed cooking large meals for the family and relatives who often came to visit. Her home was often referred to by relatives as the Mayer motel. She was fond of telling people in her youth how she coerced her dad to teach her to drive under the guise that she could save time by bringing lunch out to the fellas when they were working in the field. Before Bette, only the boys were taught to drive.

She is survived by her brother James “Jim” Johanning; four sons, Mark (Margie) of Jonesborough, Tenn., Duane (Bernadette) of Madison, Ala., Steven of La Crosse, Aaron (Ellen) of Plymouth, Minn; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Titkemeier, Michael (Colleen) Mayer, Andrew Mayer, Elizabeth (David) McIntyre, Catherine Mayer; and four great-grandchildren, Sara Beth and Emily Elizabeth Titkemeier; Philomena Rose and Josef Ambrose McIntyre.

Bette was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice; her parents; her siblings and spouses, Marie (George) Reger, Alberta (Raymond Mess, Robert) Fibikar, Bernadette (Frank) Svacina, Elnore (Frances McCarthy, Elmer) Halverson, Jeanette (Robert) Balousek, Leo (Clara) Johanning, Vincent (Kathleen) Johanning, Lucille (Alois) Casper, Della (Richard) Mackus, Joseph (Anne) Johanning, William (Eleanora Kathleen) Johanning, Barbara Honer Johanning, and infant sisters Loretta and Mary Johanning.

A graveside service will be at a later date in the Calvary Cemetery in Prairie du Chien, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating. The Garrity Funeral Home, of Prairie du Chien, is assisting the family.
