It was a spectacular start to the track and field season for the Central girls, who finished in second place at the West Delaware Early Bird Meet on April 1. As a team, the Warriors finished with 69 points, just three behind meet winner Independence.

“I was a little surprised to finish as high as we did because of that uncertainty and the number of teams, but everyone was in the same boat. With our combination of numbers and talent, we were able to fill all of the events and place in 12 of the 19 events,” coach Martha Bauder remarked.

Abby Cummer led the way with a second place finish—and a personal record—in the discus with a throw of 91’7”. She followed that with a ninth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 30’3”.

The performance was enough to make Cummer one of several team medalists. Of course, she wasn’t alone, as teammate Aly Feickert finished in 17th in discus, followed by Regan Rosol in 30th and Madi Winters in 33rd.

The Warriors sent out the same quartet in the shot put, with Feickert finishing in 25th place, followed by Rosol in 35th and Winters in 38th.

Brittni Tieden, another medalist, added to the top three finishes. She placed third in the high jump, clearing 4’8”. In the long jump, Hannah Asche came in fourth place with a distance of 14’3 3/4”, and teammate Lexi Loan finished in seventh with a jump of 14’1”. They were joined by Gracie Cummer in 12th place and Maci Kluesner in 18th.

The Warriors also performed well in the relays and medleys, especially the sprint medley relay, where the team of Mackayla Vlazny, Ashlyn Scherf, Grace Kuehl and Haley Mueller finished  eighth with a time of 2:10.3. In the shuttle hurdle relay, the Warriors sent out two teams that both finished in the top 10. The team of Brandy Beatty, Kaitlyn Wiley, Loan and McKenna Jaster finished in second place with a time of 1:16.37, while Maci Kluesner, Gracie Cummer, Eva Embretson and Taylor Moser finished seventh with a time of 1:26.81.

Central won the distance medley relay with the team of Maddy Wille, Asche, Jaydin Dettman and Delaney Scherf, who finished with a time of 4:37.93.

In the 4x200, Alicia Keppler, Loan, Mueller and Kuehl finished ninth with a time of 2:04.32, while Shannon Farmer, Madylen Gregerson, Brooklyn Amsden and Staci Herman came in 11th in 2:10.67.

In the 4x100, Kuehl, Alivia Keppler, Mueller and Wille placed fourth with a time of 56.73, while Gregerson, Vlazny, Maci Kluesner and Farmer finished 12th at 1:00.64.

The Warriors added two top-10 finishes in the 4x400, when Beatty, Delaney Scherf, Asche and Wiley placed third with a time of 4:30.21. Lizzie Royer, Jaster, Ashlyn Scherf and Dettman finished in 10th at 4:57.40.

In individual events, Ashlyn Scherf led the team with a 13th place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.92. Alivia Keppler finished 17th, Herman came in 19th and Amsden finished 31st.

In the 200, Wille claimed sixth place with a personal record time of 29.20. She was followed by Vlazny in 21st and Embretson in 34th.

The 400 saw Mylee Wingert finish in 22nd place with a personal record time of 1:21.30, and Embretson finished in 24th with a personal record time of 1:22.81.

Allie Mussman placed 13th in the 800, followed by Katelyn Scherf in 14th and Carly Kluesner in 16th place.

The team added a few more top-five finishes in the 1500, when Dettman finished third with a time of 5:58.52 and Royer took fifth with a 6:03.53 mark.

The 100 meter hurdles was another successful event for the Warriors, with three runners finishing in the top 10. Beatty placed third with a time of 17.63, followed by Wiley in eighth and Jaster in ninth. As for the 400 hurdles, Gracie Cummer finished fourth with a time of 1:17.83, and Taylor Moser came in 13th.

Other medalists included Jaster, Beatty, Wiley, Loan, Wille, Asche, Dettman and Delaney Scherf.

“This was a very unique meet. Due to COVID, most of the girls haven’t competed in their events for two years. We did get in one meet last year, so a few of our girls competed once last spring. But for so many of the girls, this meet was full of uncertainty. The freshmen hadn’t competed since seventh grade, where they usually only get five meets in and have such a short season that they don’t get a lot of time to try multiple events or get very much competitive experience, and the jump from junior high to high school was quite intimidating. Many of the rest of our team only got the one meet in last season so they didn’t gain any experience or confidence to start this season,” Bauder said. “But I didn’t feel that the girls let that bother them or affect their performances. I think they all rose to the challenge and had an excellent first meet.”

The girls will look to replicate the early season success at Postville on April 6, then at Starmont on April 8.
