Central boys show improvement in latest track and field meets

The Central boys track and field team started last week with an eight-point, 14th place finish at the Ed-Co Invitational on April 6. 

 

The eight points were earned by James Eberhardt, who finished the meet with three, while teammates Corey Weber, Sean Wilwert, Dan McGreal and Brayden Finley each contributed 1.25 points. 

 

Eberhardt shined during the throwing events, finishing sixth in the discus with a distance of 116-05. Teammate Sam Fettkether finished in 32nd place, and Mark Hertrampf came in 36th. 

 

Wilwert led the team in the long jump, placing 17th with a jump of 15-09.50 feet. Central’s two other jumpers, Lane Orr and McGreal, finished 18th and 20th, respectively. 

 

In the sprint events, the Warriors sent out three runners for the 100 meter dash. Sabastian Florek’s 13th place finish was the highest, thanks to a time of 12.62. Teammate Weber finished 18th, while Storm Huinker came in 27th. 

 

Weber also competed in the 200 meter dash, placing 25th with a time of 26.58. Two other Warrior runners, Orr and McGreal, were 31st and 34th, respectively. 

 

In the 110 meter hurdles, Brayden Finley was the top Central finisher, coming in ninth with a time of 19.02, while teammate Wilwert finished close behind in 11th, at 20.44. 

 

Finley also ran the 400 meter hurdles, where he finished in 11th place with a time of 1:05.23. 

 

The relays saw the Warriors send out three squads for the 4x100, with Weber, Wilwert, Orr and Finley combining to place 12th with a time of 50.32. The team of Huinker, Hunter Grimm, Fettkether and Florek finished 22nd, while Eberhardt, Hertrampf, Carson McClintock and Ryan Schroeder came in 32nd. 

 

In the 4x200, the Warriors once again sent out the quartet of Florek, Huinker, Fettkether and Grimm, who finished 17th after running the event in 1:54.14. 

 

But it was in the 440 meter shuttle hurdle relay where the Warriors put in their best performance, as Wilwert, Weber, McGreal and Finley earned fourth place with a time of 1:16.60. 

 

“It was a beautiful meet, and I think the warm weather helped with our performances.  Overall, we improved, but we have a long way to go before we meet our expectations,” said coach Tom Wilwert. 

 

The second meet of the week, held April 8 at Postville, went a little better for Central, as the Warriors finished seventh out of nine teams. They totaled 19 points, 8.25 of which were earned by Finley and 8 by Eberhardt. Huinker, Florek, Weber and Orr each picked up .75 points apiece. 

 

Finley started the scoring in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing third with a time of 19.11. Teammate Wilwert finished eighth in the event. Finley added to his point total in the 400 meter hurdles, coming across the finish line in fifth place with a time of 1:04.91. Wilwert crossed the line in 10th place. 

 

In the 100 meter dash, Orr was the lone Warrior entrant, finishing 13th with a time of 12.86. He was 18th in the 200, after a 27.96 run. Teammate McGreal finished just ahead of Orr in that event, coming in 15th at 27.32. 

 

The 400 meter dash had Grimm and Fettkether finishing 15th and 16th, respectively, with Grimm running it in 1:11.30, while Fettkether completed the race in 1:12.54.

 

The 4x200 saw the team of Weber, Orr, Huinker and Florek finish in sixth place with a time of 1:49.24. In the 4x100, the Warriors sent out one squad of runners, including Weber, Finley, Huinker and Florek, who finished seventh. The 800 sprint medley team of Weber, Florek, Huinker and Wilwert came in ninth with a time of 1:57.83. As for the 4x400, Orr, McGreal, Florek and Huinker combined to finish 10th. 

 

In the field events, the story continued to be Eberhardt, who notched second place in the discus with a distance of 123 feet. Six other Warriors also competed, including Joel Thiese in 19th place, Fettkether in 24th, Schroeder in 25th, McClintock in 26th, Grimm in 28th and Hertrampf in 32nd. 

 

The Warriors sent seven throwers into the shot put, with Eberhardt the top finisher. A throw of 38 feet put him in ninth place. He was followed by Schroeder in 24th, Thiese in 26th, Fettkether in 27th, McClintock in 28th, Hertrampf in 32nd and Grimm in 33rd. 

 

The Warriors returned to the track April 12, at Decorah. They’ll follow that with a meet at West Delaware on April 15.
