The Central girls track and field team put together another solid week, winning a meet at Postville, then placing second at Starmont, setting numerous personal records and season bests along the way.

In the April 6 meet at Postville, the team scored 101 points, one of its highest scores over the last three season and higher than all but one score during the 2019 season.

The Warriors also set 13 personal records and 13 season-best marks, and four athletes scored over 10 points, including Brandy Beatty with a team-high 16, Hannah Asche with 13.5, Jaydin Dettman with 10.25 and Gracie Cummer with 10.

Four of the team’s points were earned in the 100 meter dash. Maddy Wille placed fourth after running a season best 13.57. Other Central runners included Shannon Farmer, who finished 15th with a personal record time of 14.56, and Mackayla Vlazny in 20th.

In the 200, the Warriors sent out three runners, with the top finisher being Ashlyn Scherf, who came in 15th with a time of 30.77, while teammates Madylen Gregerson and Brooklyn Amsden finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively.

The 400 saw another top-five finish for the Warriors, when Kaitlyn Wiley placed fourth with a season-best 1:07.61, earning the team four points. Teammate Carly Kluesner finished 14th.

“This was a fun meet for the team. First, because the weather was fantastic and, secondly, because as team scores were announced periodically during the meet, we were ahead the whole way,” said coach Martha Bauder. “We just kept scoring in each event, which shows the combination of talent and numbers that our team has. The biggest plus is that we’re definitely not in good condition yet, so we should be able to keep improving a lot in the next meets.”

The Warriors kept the winning going at the April 8 Starmont Invitational. They comfortably finished in second place, scoring 133 points and earning 11 personal records and six season-best times.

Abby Cummer scored a season-best distance of 31 feet, 1.5 inches in the shot put and finished in second place. She was followed by Feickert in seventh and Winters in 13th.

Wille also led the way in the 200, earning a sixth place finish after crossing the line in 29.2. Mueller set a personal record time of 31.6 and finished 13th, while Amsden was 19th.

The Warriors sent out four runners in the 400, with Dettman leading the way with a fourth place finish and a season-best time of 1:06.3. Wingert ran a personal record time of 1:18.8, which was good for 10th place. Maci Kluesner and Winters finished 12th and 20th, respectively.

“This meet was quite different from Postville. I think mainly due to the weather being much colder and windy. But, overall, I thought we were just a little flat. We had some hand off errors, we didn’t have quite as many PRs and season bests,” said Bauder. “But on the other hand, placing second and scoring 133 points was actually quite good. And again, we have so much room for improvement as we gain better conditioning and experience.”

The Warriors get back on the track on April 13 at Oelwein, followed by a meet at Decorah on April 15.
