Mary O. Huser, 88, of Glen Haven, passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Lancaster. 

She was born on June 25, 1932, the daughter of Edmund and Charlotte (Ackerman) Mergen. Mary graduated from Bloomington High School in 1950. On July 24, 1951, she was united in marriage to John F. “Jack” Metcalf at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glen Haven. Together, they farmed in Glen Haven Township. Mary was a wonderful homemaker and hostess to everyone. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and playing cards. She overcame polio, breast cancer, and heart disease. Mary was a devoted member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and its Altar Society in Glen Haven. After the passing of her beloved husband, Jack, in 1969, Mary worked at the Sand Bar in Cassville, MPC and Coaches Drive-In in Prairie du Chien, and Swiss Colony. Mary’s favorite occupation was hosting at the Parson’s Inn Bed N’ Breakfast in Glen Haven. In November 1973, she was united in marriage to Lawrence “Larry” Huser. He preceded her in death in September 1999. Mary was an avid writer and Glen Haven historian. After moving to Bloomington, she attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church. 

Survivors include her four daughters, Julie Metcalf-Cull, Sally Metcalf, Carol Cale, and Cheryl Metcalf; two sons, John (Patti) and Larry (Jennifer) Metcalf; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Phelps; stepchildren, Henry (Thalia) Huser, William (Mary) Huser, and Mary (Rich) Larson; stepson-in-law, Harry McCartney; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husbands, Jack and Larry, Mary was preceded in death by two grandsons, James Cull and Matthew Metcalf; two sons-in-law, John Cull and David Cale; stepdaughter, Susie Huser McCartney; her siblings, Jerome, Donald, Raymond (Virginia), and Joseph in infancy; and her dear friend, Raymond Schildgen. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary Help of Christians in Glen Haven with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial will be in Gockel Cemetery, Glen Haven. Family and friends may call on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church where an 8:45 a.m. parish rosary will be prayed. Masks and social distancing are encouraged. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home and Crematory, in Cassville, is assisting the family.
