Wauzeka-Steuben recognizes top seniors

Julie Fischer has been named the valedictorian and Zachary Martin the salutatorian of the Wauzeka-Steuben High School 2021 graduating class.

Julie is the daughter of Jacob Fischer and Ann Fischer. She has been active throughout her high school career while excelling academically. Julie earned high honors all four years, securing herself an academic letter and four pins for her excellence in the classroom. She was most recently named to the Ridge and Valley All-Academic Team. Furthermore, Julie has been actively involved in a number of extra-curricular activities over the past four years. She participated in track and field, cheerleading and band. She earned a varsity letter in track and participated in Solo Ensemble in band. In addition, Julie has been part of numerous clubs and organizations, including the school newspaper, science club, PALS, and yearbook team. She also served as a teacher’s aide. Over the years, Julie has volunteered at Wauzeka community American Red Cross blood drives. Outside of school, she has worked at Cathman Farms and Country Gardens. Julie plans to attend UW-Platteville in the fall to major in Fine arts with an emphasis in graphic design. 

Julie is thankful for the past four years of support from “the Wauzeka-Steuben staff, [her] family, and closest friends.”

Zach is the son of Tom and Sharon Martin. He has also been actively involved and high achieving academically throughout high school. He has earned academic high honors all four years, obtaining an academic letter and four pins for his excellence in the classroom. Zach was recently named to the Ridge and Valley All-Academic Team and is an Academic All-State nominee. 

He participated in cross country, basketball, and track and field throughout his four years of high school, earning varsity letters and numerous accolades for both his athleticism and sportsmanship. Zach has been active in the National Honor Society, math club, Skills USA, science club, HOSA, Hornet Club and band. Within these clubs and organizations, Zach has excelled and been awarded various honors. He held various leadership positions within the clubs and on his athletic teams as well. Zach was named Student of Month twice and selected as a Badger Boys State delegate his junior year. Outside of school, Zach has been active in 4-H, his church, and on his family’s farm. He’s worked at Prairie Industries, Wal-Mart, and at the Wauzeka-Steuben after-school program, tutoring and facilitating enrichment activities for students. 

Over the years, Zach has also given back to his community through volunteerism. He assisted with local summer recreation program, the Wauzeka Lions Club youth basketball tournament, events at St. Wenceslaus Parish, American Red Cross blood drives, and programs put on by the local Knights of Columbus chapter. Zach plans to attend UW-Platteville to major in environmental engineering. 

Zach is most grateful for “his parents for pushing [him] to be the best [he] can be, in and out of school.”
