The MFL MarMac softball team went 2-5 last week, rebounding from a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Kee by taking two games from Postville, before losing three games in a weekend tournament at Riceville. The stretch was highlighted by junior pitcher Lauren Haberichter, who not only surpassed 100 strikeouts this season—and is currently first in Class 2A—but also threw a perfect game.

The Bulldogs hosted Kee June 7, and had an early 2-0 lead in game one, but the Hawks scored four times in the third inning and once in both the fourth and seventh innings to snag a 7-2 win.

The MFL MarMac offense tallied five hits and four walks, and also stole five bases. Savannah Schaller doubled, drove in a run and scored once. Haberichter and Kaylee Walch both doubled, while Abby Koslowski and Ashley Shaw had one single apiece.

Haberichter allowed 11 hits in seven innings, but only three of the seven runs that crossed the plate were earned. She racked up 13 strikeouts—one of multiple double-digit games this season.

Kee also won game two, this time by a score of 6-4. The Bulldogs trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but pushed one run across in that inning, followed by another in the seventh, to tie the game 4-4 and send it into extras. Kee scored twice in the top of the eighth, however, to claim the victory.

Haberichter pitched five more innings in this game, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out 10 batters. Mackenzy Ruff was on the mound for three innings, giving up five hits and four earned runs.

Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Ashley Shaw, who was a perfect 3-3, including a double, stole a base and scored twice. Lauren Kishman went 2-3, was hit by a pitch and drove in a run, while Koslowski was 2-4.

MFL MarMac hosted Postville June 9, sweeping the Pirates 10-0 and 11-0. Haberichter threw five innings of no-hit ball in game one, walking only two batters and striking out 11. (Postville had a lone hit against Ruff, who pitched one inning in relief.) Haberichter followed that up with a five-inning perfect game in the second contest of the night, this time adding 11 strikeouts to her season total.

The Bulldog offense amassed 12 hits against the Pirates in game one. Shaw had two of those hits, drove in three runs and scored once. Kaitlin Picha was 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Emily Hendrickson-Troester was 1-3, drove in a run and scored once herself. Shaw and Hendrickson-Troester each stole a base, as well.

In game two, MFL MarMac had nine hits. Kishman was a perfect 3-3, drove in a team-high four runs and scored three times. Haberichter helped herself by also going 3-3, including two doubles, and knocking in two runs. Shaw went 1-3, walked and scored three runs.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the week June 12, losing three games in a tournament at Riceville.

They faced Osage in the first match-up, narrowly falling 6-5 after a late-inning rally fell short. Haberichter was one of the offensive leaders, going 1-3 with two RBIs. Jordyn Jones had a hit and two RBIs and Kishman tacked on another RBI.

Haberichter took the loss, allowing nine hits and five runs, two of which were earned. She walked two batters and struck out 12.

In game two, MFL MarMac faced host Riceville, losing 13-5. The Bulldogs led 3-1 through one and a half innings, but a 10-run bottom of the second for the Wildcats put MFL MarMac in a hole it couldn’t dig out of. Riceville earned 15 hits against Bulldog pitching, including a homerun.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, eked out just two hits in the game, one of which was from Koslowski, who also had an RBI. Walch had the other hit, while Shaw drove in a run.

MFL MarMac lost the final tournament game 9-0 to St. Ansgar, who was boosted by a four-run fourth inning and five-run sixth. The loss went to Haberichter, who allowed five hits and four runs, two of which were earned, despite walking only one batter and striking out 10. Ruff gave up three hits, and five runs crossed the plate while she was on the mound.

It was another tough game offensively for MFL MarMac, which again had only two hits. Schaller had one hit while Autumn Shaw had the other.

MFL MarMac now sits at 3-14 overall and 3-3 in the Upper Iowa Conference. This week is another busy one for the Bulldogs, who play at Alburnett on June 15 before hosting Clayton Ridge for a doubleheader on June 16 and Waukon for a single game on June 18. They’ll play in a tournament at Midland over the weekend.
