James H. “Jim” Sass, 92, of Bloomington, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born on March 29, 1929, the son of John and Ella (Vogelsang) Sass. Jim graduated from Marquette High School in Iowa and was drafted into the United States Army, stationed in Germany, during the Korean Conflict. On Dec. 21, 1952, he was united in marriage to Doris J. Martin at the Bloomington United Methodist Church. After their marriage, the couple lived in Winona, Minn., where Jim was employed as a machinist with the Milwaukee Railroad. They moved to Milwaukee after the depot in Winona closed. Jim and Doris later moved to Minnesota, where Jim was employed at the Sioux Line Railroad. In 1991, they retired and moved to Bloomington. He was a member of the Bloomington United Methodist Church and the Abraham Hickok Wetmore American Legion Post No. 148 of Bloomington. Jim was able to travel to Washington, D.C. with the Honor Flight. He liked making wine, gardening, polishing rocks, fishing, and collecting railroad memorabilia. After Doris’ passing, Jim enjoyed listening to music and attending the Friday night dances at Huckelberry’s in Prairie du Chien. He dearly loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his daughters, Linda (Tom) Sander and Gail Hasenbein; granddaughter, Jessica (Alex) Clemmons; a grandson, Matthew Hasenbein; two greatgrandchildren, Nora and Wyatt James Clemmons; two sisters-in-law, Arv and Pat Martin; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Doris, Jim was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Diane; a son-in-law, David Hasenbein; his brothers, Richard, Lee, and Earl Sass; three brothers-in-law, Keith, Kenny, and Richard “Bud” Martin; and a sister-in-law, LaVonne “Lew” Martin.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bloomington United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Ann Floerke officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Lumpkin Cemetery, Bloomington Township. Family and friends may call on Sunday, Aug. 15, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home and Crematory in Bloomington and on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.
