A chemical incident in downtown Elkader early last week required the fire department to call in the Linn County Regional HAZMAT Team for assistance.

Elkader Fire Chief Scott Marmann said the department was called to the building of author and illustrator Arthur Geisert around 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 10.

“We set up fans to ventilate the building, but the odor didn’t go away. We called Linn County HAZMAT because we didn’t know what chemicals he was using for his printing process,” Marmann explained.

In a post on its Facebook page, the HAZMAT team said a chemical mixture in the building had created chlorine gas.

Emergency personnel were able to neutralize the chemicals and clean up the building. Marmann said the department was on scene for roughly four hours.

In his eight years as chief, Marmann noted this is only the second time the HAZMAT team has been contacted for assistance.
