Kesang Marisa Olsen, beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend, passed away on Sept. 3, 2021. Born in Kathmandu, Nepal, on Oct. 24, 1992, Kesang (Kessi) moved to northeast Iowa at age 3 and later lived, traveled and studied in diverse cultures. Kessi attended high school at Colegio Americano de Guatemala, graduating in 2011. She attended Augsburg University where she majored in journalism and communication studies, graduating with Suma Cum Laude honors in 2015. As a journalist and activist in college, she was inspirited to bring light through lens, voice and writing to the struggles and beauty of humanity. Even from a young age, Kessi was an accomplished writer, winning the Cyprus Highgate Creative Writing Competition in 2007 and later having her poetry featured in “Iowa’s Best Emerging Poets” in 2018. 

 

Kessi is survived by her parents, Edric and Kellie (Masters) Olsen; siblings, Erin (Nelson) Olsen-Telles and Jens (Kala) Olsen; nieces, nephew and grandmother, Kay Masters. A celebration of life will be held for Kessi on Oct. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m., at her parents’ residence in McGregor.
