Dettman leads Central girls in Waukon JV race

The Central cross-country team continued with its strong season Sept. 21, in a meet at Waukon.
The girls finished second as a team at the JV level with a score of 40, while Jaydin Dettman won the JV race.
The decision to run as JV rather than varsity was a “coach’s decision,” but coach Martha Bauder added the “team responded well.”
The second place finish came behind Decorah, who had a team score of 20.
Aside from Dettman, the girls team had two other top-10 finishers in Delaney Scherf and Taylor Moser. The Warriors ran without Hannah Asche, who is nursing a sore hip, but the rest of the team made up for her absence. Kaitlyn Wiley and Reese Berns made it five Central runners who finished inside the top 15, as Wiley placed 13th and Berns 14th in a season best time. Ashlyn Scherf finished 26th and Haley Mueller was 28th, both running season best times.
The boys also ran in the JV race, but were again without Gavin Holst, who is still recovering from an illness. Corey Weber put in a season best time to finish sixth of 91 runners. Teammates Brayden Finley and Tate Berns finished in 15th and 82nd, respectively.
“This was one of the best weather days for the season and for the Waukon course, so we had many good individual performances. They are progressing nicely and we’ll know more against the 1A competition coming up on our October meets,” Bauder said.
The cross country team heads to the Jesup Golf and Country Club on Sept. 28, for their next meet.
