“It was a little warm for the runners, but once again, we had another good meet weather wise as compared to so many of the past few seasons. The Jesup meet is always one of our biggest meets, with 25 teams competing, and the course is generally one of our fastest of the season and we posted many personal bests for the team members.”

That’s how Central cross country coach Martha Bauder summed up the team’s latest meet at Jesup, where the varsity girls finished 11th of 22 teams, with Hannah Asche’s 17th place finish leading the way. Asche finished in a season and course best time of 20:58.

To add some context, when compared against other class 1A schools, Central finished fourth. While the Warriors competed well as a team, Bauder added, “Moving forward, we still need to work on narrowing our spread between our top five runners, so that will be the goal for the rest of our upcoming meets.”

As for other members of the varsity girls team, Jaydin Dettman finished 39th in a course best time of 22:27, and Delaney Scherf, who ran a season best 22:59, finished 54th.  Taylor Moser’s 79th place finish rounded out the Central runners who finished inside the top 100 out of 156 total athletes.

The JV girls were highlighted by Haley Mueller’s 41st finish in a field of 142 runners. Mueller ran a season best time of 26:05. Other season best times were recorded by Ashlyn Scherf, who finished 46th, and Keeley Curran, who crossed the line in 52nd. Mylee Wingert placed 56th and Eva Embretson’s 64th place finish in 26:58 was the best time of her three-year career.

“The JV girls finished seventh of 12 complete teams and second of class 1A teams. There’s a good intrasquad competition going on amongst those girls to see who will battle for an opportunity to round out our top seven runners for our conference and district meets,” Bauder said.

Central’s varsity boys finished 24th of 28 complete teams, with Corey Weber’s 86th place finish out of 186 runners being the team’s best. Gavin Holst was close behind in 88th, while Brayden Finley finished 117th. Weber ran a course best time of 19:29 and Finley ran a season best time of 20:07.

“It was also great for the varsity boys to finally have a team score. So our goal moving forward is to keep them all healthy and improving their times so they can be at their best by conference and district,” Bauder said.

The team next travels to South Winneshiek Golf and Country Club on Oct. 5.
