The MFL MarMac volleyball team picked up two big wins over West Central and South Winneshiek last week, improving their season record to 12-11 and Upper Iowa Conference standing to 4-2.

The Bulldogs’ 3-1 victory over West Central came Oct. 5, boosted by 25-15 and 25-21 scores in the first two sets. The Blue Devils clawed back into the match with a 25-23 win in the third frame, but MFL MarMac put them away by the same score in set four.

MFL MarMac managed the win despite trailing West Central in both kills, 33-13, and assists, 31-13. The Blue Devils were also far more efficient from the service line, hitting 92.8 percent compared to 69.2 percent for the Bulldogs. MFL MarMac was able to best them in the ace department, however, smacking 12 to West Central’s seven.

The Bulldogs’ kills leader was senior Riley Moreland, with seven. She was also second on the team in assists, with three.  Grace Anderson added three kills and Karli Tilson two, while Lakota Morrissey had a leading nine assists.

Moreland and Anderson each accounted for one of the team’s two total blocks, and Miranda Lang snagged a team-high 20 digs. Kadence Pape was also a key back row player, digging 10 balls, while Kaitlin Picha had nine, Moreland eight, Morrissey seven and Anderson six.

Picha proved difficult for the Blue Devils at the service line, completing 11 of 16 attempts, including a team-high four aces. Lang was 10-13 with three aces, and Moreland was 10-12 with one ace. Four other players—Morrissey, Pape, Brooke Gillitzer, and Ashley Shaw—each scored an ace in the victory.

The Bulldogs followed that up with a 3-2 nail biter at South Winn on Oct. 7. Similar to the previous game, MFL MarMac went up early by scores of 25-20 and 25-16. The Warriors evened it up with convincing 25-13 and 25-18 totals in the third and fourth sets, before the Bulldogs clinched the win with a 15-11 advantage in the final frame.

MFL MarMac again scored fewer kills in this match-up, 34-23, but showed more productivity on the attempts. The Bulldogs took only 73 swings compared to a whopping 118 for South Winn.

Moreland was MFL MarMac’s top threat at the net, accounting for 13 kills, and Tilson added three. Carlie Jones and Savannah Schaller each contributed two kills.

Lang’s 19 digs were again most on the team, followed by 13 for Moreland, who also earned three blocks. Pape picked up eight digs and Picha six, while Morrissey and Tilson grabbed four apiece.

South Winn put on a serving clinic in the game, making 87.6 percent of attempts, including 16 aces. Three players had five each. The Bulldogs were able to up their efficiency to 78.7 percent, however, and score six aces of their own. Lang had three of those on an 18-24 night. Moreland made 15 of 18 serves with an ace, and Pape hit 11 of 15 with an ace. The other ace went to Picha, who was 6-8 in the game.

MFL MarMac will wrap up its regular season this week, hosting Clayton Ridge on Oct. 12 and Kee on Oct. 14.
