MFL MarMac student Abby Schellhorn last week signed a letter of intent to run cross country at Clarke University in Dubuque.

The senior, who also plans to participate in track and choir while pursuing a master’s degree in social work and minor in psychology, didn’t initially envision being a college athlete.

“When I was filling out the application, I had to check mark every sport I was in,” Schellhorn explained, “and I got in touch with the head cross country coach at Clarke.”

She recently met and practiced with the cross country team.

“It was a really good experience, and I knew I’d fit in really well there,” she said.

Schellhorn will join the Clarke program with just one year of high school cross country under her belt. She was attracted to the sport this year to help combat anxiety, and has been one of MFL MarMac’s top varsity runners.

“When I got to running track and cross country, I was mentally better and sharper. This is my first year ever running cross country and it’s just matched out really well to me,” Schellhorn said. “It keeps me active and in shape. I enjoy running and the team is awesome.”

“I want to thank my teammates and coaches for supporting me through this because I couldn’t have done it without them,” she added.

Now, Schellhorn looks forward to being involved in a mixture of activities at the college level. The music director and coaches are willing to be flexible with her schedule.

“I think it will help me stay focused and on track, and with time management and the mental part as well,” she shared.
