A 30-year-old Prairie du Chien man who was convicted of second degree reckless homicide in the July 10, 2020 death of a 3-year-old boy in the town of Prairie du Chien was sentenced in Crawford County Circuit Court Friday.

Judge Robert VanDeHey sentenced Chase Harville to a bifurcated sentence of 30 years. Harville was sentenced to 20 years in state prison to be followed by 10 years of extended supervision.

As conditions of his extended supervision, Harville shall have no contact with children under the age of 10 without the consent of the probation agent, must participate and follow through with any assessments, counseling or programming deemed appropriate by the Department of Corrections, and must submit to any testing that probation deems appropriate.

Harville must also pay $7,601.60 in restitution, $163 in court costs, a mandatory victim/witness surcharge of $92, and a DNA analysis surcharge of $250. Other costs amount to $13.

Harville was found guilty as part of a plea agreement on Aug. 3, 2021 of second degree reckless homicide with a repeater modifier. Harville was originally charged with first degree reckless homicide. Charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of drug paraphernalia, and battery (domestic abuse) were dismissed but read into the record for sentencing purposes.

Prior to Harville’s sentencing, Crawford County District Attorney Luke Steiner recommended a sentence of 21 years of initial confinement in prison to be followed by 10 years of extended supervision with conditions and restitution.

Harville’s attorney, Jeremiah Meyer-O’Day, requested a sentence of 10 to 15 years of initial confinement followed by 10 years of extended supervision.
