John C. Luster (John the Barber), age 82, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Harpers Ferry on Nov. 12, 1938, the son of John O. and Loella (Schellsmidt) Luster. He was the seventh child of 11. 

 

After graduating high school, he entered the U.S. Navy and served for four years. He then attended barber college in Davenport and barbered for 45 years in McGregor. 

 

In 1964, he married Joyce McFarland at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Four children were born to this union: Joan (Paul) Bowar, John (Heather) Luster of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Diane (Rick) Morovits of Smithville, Mo., and Tammy (Dave) Bartholomew of Costa Mesa, Calif. He is survived by eight grandchildren, Tim, Nolan and Claire Bowar, Connor (Nikki) and Erin Morovits, John Jr., Mitchell and Brady Luster; one great-grandchild, Addy Morovits; two brothers, Clarence (Kay) and Charles (Rita); three sisters, Madonna (Jim) Rouiller, Helen (Dick) Hanesworth and Charlotte (Glen) Monroe. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and a special family member, Benny Bratland; his sisters, Mary (Neal) Kane and Myrtle (Don) Spinner; and brothers, Ernie (Alice) Luster, James (Virginia) Luster and Harland (Connie) Luster. 

 

A mass of Christian burial was held on Nov. 1, at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, Wis., Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating, with burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Harpers Ferry. Military honors were accorded graveside by the Harpers Ferry Legion Post 722. Friends called at the Garrity Funeral Home on Oct. 31.
