The MFL MarMac girls basketball team defeated North Fayette Valley 58-42 in its Nov. 23 season opener.

After trailing 18-14 through the first period, the Bulldogs rattled off a 20-7 run to close out the half up 34-25. The TigerHawks narrowed that lead to just 41-38 in the third quarter, but MFL MarMac finished with another large scoring run—17-4—to claim the victory.

The Bulldogs shot 35.1 percent from the field, slightly better than the 31.1 percent from NFV. The difference came at the three-point line—where MFL MarMac out-shot the TigerHawks 35 percent versus 18.2 percent—and in turnovers. NFV coughed the ball up 22 times, including 15 steals by the aggressive Bulldog defense. MFL MarMac, meanwhile, committed just 13 turnovers.

Riley Moreland had a double-double for MFL MarMac, racking up a team-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. The senior shot 60 percent from the field, including 3-6 from behind the arc. She also snagged a team-leading four steals and had the Bulldogs’ lone block.

Fellow senior Miranda Lang also had a good night, picking up 11 points, three steals, three rebounds and two assists. Lakota Morrissey knocked down eight points—six of which came from the three-point line—and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Grace Anderson chipped in six points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist, while Brooklynn Moon had five points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Carlie Jones finished the game with four points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal.

MFL MarMac will look to carry that winning momentum to this week, starting with a tough match-up at Waukon on Nov. 29. The Bulldogs will then host conference foe Turkey Valley on Nov. 30.
