The MFL MarMac wrestling team placed third out of seven schools at Starmont’s Doug Guilford Tournament on Dec. 18. The Bulldogs totaled 168 points, putting them just two points behind second place Monticello and 15 behind tournament champion Starmont.

Senior Gabe McGeough led the effort, scoring his second straight tournament championship at 152 pounds. MFL MarMac also had three wrestlers finish just off the top of the podium, with Bryce Radloff and Kashton Mathis placing second at 138 and 160 pounds, respectively. Senior Andrew Heins, in his first competition of the season, was second at 132 pounds.

Another three wrestlers—Holden Mathis (126), Tristen Koehn (145) and Taylor Herzmann (182)—placed third in their respective weight classes. Nolan Lerch wrestled to fourth at 220 pounds, while Jack Vorwald (120), Quinn McGeough (145) and Austin Schaller (220) were all fifth. Finishing sixth in their weight classes were Keith Anderson (113), Avery Thornton (170), Collin Henkels (195) and Mason Overton (285). Rylee Kugel, wrestling at 126 pounds, did not place.

Girls wrestle well at Wilton

Bulldog wrestlers Kadence Pape and Mackenzie Bachman performed well at the Wilton JV and Women’s Wrestling Tournament on Dec. 18.

Pape, a junior, placed third in the HS Female 6 class. She started the day off strong, pinning Bettendorf’s Lauren Rogalla in just 35 seconds, before losing by fall in two tough matches. Pape’s round two match against Caitlin Reiter of Pleasantville went over five minutes and the round three bout with East Buchanan’s Destiny Krum went over three minutes.

Bachman finished fourth in the HS Female 15 class. Despite going 0-3, the freshman wrestled three strong matches. That included a nearly five-minute match in round one, which she lost by fall to Phoenix Gryp of Williamsburg.
