Winter art workshops return to The Left Bank Shop and Gallery in McGregor in January and February. Classes, which are held in the historical bank building at 158 Main St., are all taught by local artists and suitable for teens and adults. Beginners are welcome. All classes are offered for a small fee. The workshops include:

Watercolor Painting | Saturday, Jan. 8, 9 a.m. to noon - Artist Natalie Campbell of Glen Haven, Wis., will guide the class in a painting of a local McGregor scene. Natalie will bring a drawing of the scene to help participants create a sketch. She will also provide a color copy of the scene and will demonstrate each step as the class works through the painting. All materials will be provided and participants are welcome to bring along their own supplies to use.

Acrylic Painting on 11x14-inch Canvas | Saturday, Jan. 22, 9 a.m. to noon - Artist Sally Marshall of Prairie du Chien, Wis., will guide the class in creating a silhouette painting. Students will learn to use dramatic darks and brilliant yellows and reds to produce a work of art that illustrates how the contrast between light and shadow brings a painting to life. All materials will be provided. Participants should plan to bring along a smock or old long-sleeved shirt to protect their clothes.

Three-Dimensional Collage | Saturday, Jan. 29, 9 a.m. to noon - Artist Judy Carlson of Prairie du Chien, Wis., will lead the class in creating a 3-D collage. Participants should bring a box form, an old book or other object of your choice along with materials that can be used to create a personal design, such as dried flowers, leaves, woodland objects, buttons, corks, string, colorful fabrics or printed paper. Bring along a scissors or matt knife, ruler and your imagination. Judy will bring some of her own materials for the class to use, as well as glue and gesso to seal the finished work.

Watercolor Batik on Rice Paper | Saturday, Feb. 5, 9 a.m. to noon - Presented by artist Natalie Campbell of Glen Haven, Wis. Participants will create two watercolor paintings on rice paper to use for the fronts of cards. Batik is a process of building wax onto rice paper to save that color. Once the rice paper is filled with wax, it is cracked to allow the paint into the cracks. This makes the painting look like a batik. Once done, participants will melt the wax off with an iron. This small painting will then be added to card stock as a card front. Attendees will do two different batiks to make two cards. All materials will be provided and participants are welcome to bring along their own supplies to use.

3-D Drawing: Introduction to Wire Sculpture | Saturday, Feb. 12, 9 a.m. to noon - Taught by artist Hans Gill of Eastman, Wis. Learn to bend, join and form wire into a variety of shapes. Wire can be used to give dimension and interest to your creations, whether realistic or abstract. Using hand tools while working with wire, you’ll learn bending, joining and splicing, forming, adding and subtracting. All tools and materials will be provided. Please bring safety glasses if you have them. Hans will have some on hand, too. Class size is limited to 10 participants.

Basket Weaving | Saturday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. -Margaret Stone of Elkader will guide the class in creating a wall pouch basket with holly embellishment. Participants should bring an old towel, a dozen snap clothespins, tape measure, water spray bottle, ice cream bucket or similar size, small screwdriver, sharp scissors and pliers. This is a four-hour class so you may want to bring a sack lunch or snack/drink.

Wool Felting | Saturday, Feb. 26, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Felting fun with Dee Anna Weed. Create a simple project—a small bowl, pouch, wall hanging or table mat—using loose sheep wool. Beginners are welcome. Class will be six hours long, including a 30-minute lunch break. The first hour of the class is really important, especially if you are a beginner, so please be on time. Please bring two or three older bath towels, a pair of sharp scissors and a sack lunch with drink. Wool fiber, decorative fibers and all other supplies and equipment will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own supplies if you want, but this is not required. You will need to be able to stand for an hour or more at a time and work with your hands in an activity similar to kneading bread dough or doing body massage. Wear a top with sleeves you can roll up and sturdy, comfortable shoes. Your clothes may get a bit damp, so bring a water-resistant apron if you like.
