The MFL MarMac girls basketball team is now sitting alone atop the Upper Iowa Conference standings. The Bulldogs, now 6-3 overall, edged Central 58-54 in a Dec. 21 showdown with the only other unbeaten team in the conference.

MFL MarMac raced out to an early 16-7 lead in the first quarter, but couldn’t sustain the momentum into the next period, clinging to just a 28-27 advantage by halftime. The Bulldogs then worked to a slim 45-42 lead through the third quarter and were able to hold off the Warriors down the stretch.

Riley Moreland scored a team-high 29 points—22 of which came in the first half—and finished out the double-double with 14 rebounds. She also tallied each of MFL MarMac’s three blocks and picked up three assists. Miranda Lang contributed nine points to the team total along with five rebounds, one assist and one steal. Brooklynn Moon sunk three shots from behind the arc, for nine points, and snagged two rebounds, while Lakota Morrissey hit one three pointer, adding to her five-point total. Her stat line also included five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Overall, the Bulldogs shot 47.1 percent from the field and were 45.5 percent from three-point range.

Off this week for winter break, MFL MarMac will be back in action Jan. 4, at Clayton Ridge (2-8), then host North Fayette Valley (4-2) in Monona on Jan. 7.
