CANCELED: Celebrate the New Year as a French-Canadian
UPDATE: 12-29 AT 2PM - CANCELED
Bonne Année has been canceled for its first year, unfortunately, due to COVID-19 concerns
The first permanent residents of Prairie du Chien were French speaking people from the Illinois County and Canada. They brought their culture and traditions to their new home. This included the celebration of the new year: Bonne Année.
Come celebrate Bonne Année on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the St. Germain dit Gauthier-Coorough House on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien.
Bonne Année was the day friends and family visited and exchanged small gifts. It was a day of greetings, music, and special foods to eat.
In 19th century tradition, all are welcome to come to the St. Germain House. A troupe of traveling singers, wearing disguise in celebration of la Guiannée, may appear to entertain in return for food and drink, and ask all to join in the special song sung at this time of the year. Throughout the day there will be lively fiddle music, singing of voyageur songs, spiced cider, and tasty baked goods. Grand-père will be sitting in his special chair to greet all and offer a wish of bonne année.
The St. Germain House will be open to visit and enjoy the day.
Admission is free, though a donation to support the continued care of the house will be appreciated. At 3 p.m., Mary Elise Antoine will present a program, “The French in Wisconsin” at the Villa Louis Fur Trade building on Bolvin Street, also with free admission. The Villa Louis Museum Store will be open from 11 a.m. until the end of the day’s events.
The St. Germain dit Gauthier-Coorough House is owned by the Prairie du Chien Historical Society and interprets the French-Canadian fur trade culture of early 19th century Prairie du Chien.
