Emergency personnel save deer

Emergency personnel had an unusual call to service in Prairie du Chien last Wednesday, Dec. 29. They rescued a deer that had fallen through the ice.
According to Prairie du Chien Fire Chief Tad Beutin, ice fishermen noticed the deer, about 200 yards north of the Blackhawk Avenue bridge, and called the police. From there, the fire department was dispatched, putting to use their fire and rescue boat on the icy Mississippi River.
Beutin said several firemen were able to “hog tie” the young doe and grab it. They got the rope around its waist and pulled it onto the boat.
“It was pretty panicked,” he said.
But, it survived the ordeal, and the officials ended up letting it go over at the horse park east of town.
Beutin said Bridgeport Fire was also called for mutual aid in case they would have been needed for another call.
