The MFL MarMac girls basketball team remains perfect in the Upper Iowa Conference, after scoring two big wins over Clayton Ridge and North Fayette Valley last week.

The Bulldogs cruised to a 53-28 victory over the Eagles on Jan. 4, in the first game back from winter break. They shot over 54 percent in the contest, including 47 percent from three-point range.

Brooklynn Moon was the team’s leading scorer, sinking three of eight attempts from behind the arc, accounting for nine of her 15-point total. Ashley Shaw added eight points along with two assists, a steal and a rebound, while Miranda Lang picked up seven points, two rebounds and a team-high five assists and four steals. Riley Moreland netted just six points in the win, but was tops in rebounds, with eight, and had two assists and MFL MarMac’s lone block.

The Bulldogs followed that up with a 56-37 victory over the TigerHawks on Jan. 7. The team continued to shoot well from the field, at 48 percent, in what was initially a close game. NFV was down just 16-13 in the first quarter, but managed only six points the rest of the half, and MFL MarMac took a 29-19 lead into the locker room. The Bulldogs continued to add on in the second half, going up 43-30 after the third period, then closing out the game with a 13-7 run.

MFL MarMac snagged 29 rebounds in the contest and also took care of the ball, committing only eight turnovers. Defensively, the Bulldogs also picked up four steals and two blocks, both by Moreland, who added a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds.

Grace Anderson scored in double digits as well, with 13 points, and tallied five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Moon pitched in 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Lang’s stat line included eight points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Lakota Morrissey finished the night with six points, four assists and a rebound.

The wins improved the Bulldogs to 8-0 in the conference and 8-3 overall. They’ll try to make it four wins in a row Jan. 10 at Decorah, before heading to a conference match-up at Turkey Valley on Jan. 11.
