Mariajane “Maria” Mezera, 81, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022, at home surrounded by her family. 

She was born April 29, 1940, the daughter of Louis and Lella (Ariss) Braudt. She graduated from Patch Grove High School before going to work at a financial institution in Madison. She met the love of her life, Aelred “Hop” Mezera, and they were married on July 18, 1959, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Patch Grove. Together, they moved back to Prairie du Chien before purchasing the family farm in 1964, where together they raised their family. Maria also worked at H&R Block in Prairie du Chien for over 35 years until retirement. She was a farmer, gardener, 4-H leader, member of the Irish Ridge Homemakers, and an active member of the Rural Bridgeport and Prairie du Chien Women’s Auxiliary and First Responders. As an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien, she was known for her delicious chicken noodle soup served at the annual fall church bazaar. She enjoyed playing euchre with the local 7-Mile Community Card Club, solving puzzles, spending time with her family and watching her grandchildren grow. She was a kind and patient soul, loved by all who met her. 

Maria is survived by her husband of 62 years, Aelred “Hop” Mezera; their children Vicki (Martin) Dudenbostel, Mike (Judy) Mezera, Greg (Beth) Mezera, William (Windy) Mezera, Karen Hertrampf, and Amanda (Matthew) Poynter; her sister Ruby Jahnke; her grandchildren Abbygail Dudenbostel, Michael (Brayanne) Hagensick, Kevin and Catherine Warrington, Steven (Becky Swiggum) Anderson, Nicole Beisner, Liz (Brett) Swatek, Douglas, Austin, and Ashley Mezera, Venessa (Alexander) Udelhoven, Alysa (Jordan) Mulrooney, Kelly (Kyle) Rokusek, Tyler and Travis Hertrampf, Blake, Gracelyn, Lucas, and Olivia Poynter; 25 great-grandchildren with one on the way, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Douglas; her granddaughters, Grace Mary, Laura and Mariah Dudenbostel, and her brother, Dale Braudt. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiated, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Her wake was at Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien on Monday, Feb. 7, with the Holy Rosary. Friends may also call on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of departure for church.
