Jesse Allan Jarman, 78, of Edgewood, formerly of Strawberry Point, died on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home surrounded by his family. He was born on Sept. 15, 1943, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of Joe and Bessie “Betty” (Allen) Jarman, and foster son of Clifford and Vadah Gilpen. Jesse attended grade school in Oklahoma City, where at the age of 8 he sold doughnuts from door to door before school and picked cotton after school. When turning 13, he caddied at a local golf course. Jesse was a 1961 graduate of U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City, where he was on the wrestling and cross country teams.

 

Following graduation, Jesse enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served for four years and was honorably discharged in 1964. He was stationed at San Diego, Calif., Litchfield Park, Phoenix, Ariz., San Francisco, Calif., and Midway Island Military Base. He wrestled on the U.S. Navy wrestling team. 

 

After his discharge, Jesse traveled to Iowa with a military friend, Butch Kelly, where he met his wife-to-be at a wedding dance in Communia in October 1964. On Dec. 26, 1964, Jesse and Carol Hakert were married at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport. Two daughters, Sheri and Sandi, were born to this union. The family lived near Elkader, where Jesse was the produce manager at Spud’s Super Value. The family then moved to Parnell, where he worked at Amana Refrigeration. Then, in 1973, they returned to Strawberry Point, where Jesse and Carol made their home for 48 years. Jesse worked at Hawkeye Castings as plant supervisor, Jarman Electric, Atwood and Cargill, from where he retired as maintenance supervisor. After retirement, Jesse drove a rural mail route for seven years, which he enjoyed doing.

 

Jesse was in a square dancing club and bowling league, and was an avid golfer. He served on the board at the Backbone Golf and Country Club. Jesse was a wrestling and football official for many years. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing with many lifelong friends. Jesse loved spending time with his friends and family. 

 

Survivors include his two daughters, Sheri (Jeff Sylvester) Refle of Goodyear, Ariz., and Sandi (Steve) Barton of Strawberry Point; six grandchildren, Elisha (Joe) Phelps, Allan Brown, Amber (Michael Kula) Brown, Chance Barton, Brandon (Lindsey) Barton and Sydney (Logan) Davis; eight great-grandchildren, Christian, Madelyn, Brandon, Colton, Kaidyn, Aliyah, Owen and Declan; one brother, Johnny Gilpen of Texas; sister-and brother-in-law, Shirley (Ray) Horns of Strawberry Point; a sister-in-law, Gina Briggs of Volga; and six nieces and nephews, Melissa (Nick) Fettkether, Michael (Amy) Horns, Matthew (Amy) Horns, Kevin (Brooke) Hakert, Andy (Jenni) Hakert and Amanda Hakert.

 

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol; three brothers, Jimmy, Jerry and Wendall Jarman; one sister, Beverly Myers; a son-in-law, Jan Refle; and one brother-in-law, Don Hakert.

 

A special thank you to the Lincolnwood Assisted Living facility, where Jesse sincerely loved the staff as he made this his new home which he truly loved. Also, thank you to the Edgewood Convalescent Home and Dr. Scot Christiansen for their excellent care during his final days.

 

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the funeral home on Monday.

 

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, with Rev. Mary Green officiating.

 

Interment with military rites will be at Mederville Cemetery, Mederville.
