Joseph B. “Bud” Prew, 76, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, at home surrounded by his family. 

He was born in Prairie du Chien on Sept. 8, 1945, the son of Peter and Mildred (Phillip) Prew. He graduated from Seneca High School in the class of 1964 before serving in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Vietnam War. Joe married Joanne Snell on Sept. 27, 1969, at St. John’s Catholic Church, and together they raised their family in the Prairie du Chien area. He hauled milk for Eastman Creamery before going to work at 3M Company in Prairie du Chien until retirement. After retiring, Joe worked part time for Aztec (Dillman Equipment) for 15 years. Joe was an active member of the Prairie du Chien Military Honor Guard, serving as commander for several years. He was also an active member of the American Legion Post 68, St. John’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien, the Knights of Columbus Campion Council #1840, and the Prairie Rod & Gun Club. Joe was an avid woodworker and loved the outdoors. He looked forward to deer hunting every year. 

He is survived by his wife, Joanne; their two sons, Tom (Malen) and Andrew (Kristina); brothers, Peter (Carol Crusan), Raymond (Julie), Louis, and Ronald (Joanne) Prew; sisters, Susie Thompson, Margaret Bishell, Jeanette (Roger) Head, and Marlene (Ken) Baker; grandchildren, Trent and Maddison Prew; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Marx; and infant sister, Edith. 

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating with inurnment in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the Garrity Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the funeral home one hour prior to Mass. Military honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to GIST Cancer Research, the Prairie du Chien Military Honor Guard, or Prairie Catholic Schools.
