Roland “Rollie” Henkes passed away on Feb. 7, 2022, at the age of 87, in San Francisco, Calif.

An ag journalism graduate of Iowa State University and University of Illinois, Rollie was on the staff of the The Dakota Farmer (Aberdeen) and World Farming (Kansas City), retiring after 25 years as international editor of John Deere’s The Furrow (Moline).

“It’s something all of us can do.” For 10 years in his retirement, Rollie edited and published Woodlands and Prairies (woodlandsandprairies.com), a “mostly” quarterly magazine dedicated to wise use of our world. Rollie advocated cleaner air, clearer water, richer soil, greater biological diversity and healthier food from healthier land. Mrs. Woods, the magazine icon, addressed her readers as “Dear Friends,” advocating four actions: Bring back the prairies and restore oak savannas; make the wetlands wet and replace sterile lawns with deep-rooted native perennials; practice sustainable forestry and sustainable agriculture; protect endangered plants and animals and preserve our natural heritage.

A Walker, making lifelong friends along the path. A Camper, traversing North American landscapes in a vintage Sunrader. A Snowbird, summering on the bluffs of the Yellow River Valley in northeast Iowa then wintering in Yuma, Ariz. A House Guest, maintaining peace and comfort with lifelong connections. A Photo and Journalist, snapping sharp, considerate memories along his journey, always willing to share “for old time’s sake.” Rollie’s daily journal grounded his thoughts, recorded evening recipes and gave reminders of “this day last year.”

Rollie was preceded in death by his sister Pat in 1978 and wife Arlone in 1997.

He is survived by family Polly, Lynn, Bonnie, Dean, Lezanne, Steven and Tracy; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Remit memorials to: Giard Cemetery Association, 16609 Hwy. 13, Farmersburg, IA 52047.
