Dr. Chris F. Hugo, 76, of Guttenberg passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022.

Visitation was Sunday, Feb. 27, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and before services at the church. 

Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 28, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Michael Ashman.

Chris was born on Jan. 3, 1946, in Pretoria, South Africa, the son of Christoffel and Jolien (Bester) Hugo.

Chris grew up in Pretoria and graduated high school in 1964. He later did his undergraduate degree at Loma Linda University in California, which is when he fell in love with the United States. Chris graduated medical school from the University of Pretoria in 1979 and completed his surgery residency in Cape Town. On Nov. 4, 1978, he was united in marriage with Ammi Botha in Pretoria, South Africa. He moved his family to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1989, which is where his youngest daughter was born, and then to the United States (South Dakota) in 1992. He also practiced in Deadwood and Vermillion, S.D. He completed his MBA from the University of South Dakota.

Chris enjoyed visiting the South African game parks, gardening, going for motorcycle rides, telling stories (sometimes a bit long winded) and spending time with his family. 

Chris will be forever loved and cherished by his wife, Ammi; four children, Gisela Kirilova along with her son, Caleb; Kirstin Hugo, Paul (Andrea) Hugo along with their daughter, Coraline, and Mila Hugo; two siblings, Anton (Gwen) and Pierre (Phia) and many other relatives and friends. 

Chris was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leon Hugo.
