Umbrella Arts (UA) has chosen "Butterflies of Freedom" as their theme for the 2022 UA sculpture contest.

"Butterflies symbolize many things – freedom, hope, love of nature, solitude, metamorphosis, and diversity.  2022 springs us forward as we view a diverse range of freedoms," says a UA representative, citing the following:

• Freedom from isolation and fear of a worldwide pandemic

• Freedom from war being fought on our country's soil while watching the Ukrainian people valiantly fight for their country and cultures

• Freedom to share and comfort those with mental and physical illnesses

• Freedom to view the simplicity and complexities of a natural world where watching the interactions of the smallest of things such as a butterfly gives much color and joy to our senses

• Freedom to know we are beautifully created to go through many metamorphoses in our lives that bring unknown strength, endurance and beauty through each struggle.

"Our vision of success is to encourage residents and welcome visitors to our community to walk/bike/drive around and find joy and freedom in the process," they shared. "Process is always mixed in ideation, planning, problem solving, learning, and sharing/celebrating through all the various forms of creating."

The annual art competition challenges everyone in the community to participate by creating or enjoying the creation of others. "Projects that tie in with other Guttenberg projects that fit in with this theme are The Guttenberg Rotary Club’s Butterfly garden, Freedom Rock, and the Natural Beauty of Guttenberg," they listed.

Prizes will be awarded based on originality, creativity, presentation, and how they fit the theme. "Some entries may lend themselves to being a part of Stars & Stripes parade or GermanFest celebration," they added.

Artistic submissions

• A literary/written word/song. Examples: write an original poem, story, one-act play, music, game, rap, dance, etc. Winners should expect their entry will be publicized, acted, or performed.

• An artistic expression/art piece or sculpture etc. out of any material. Examples: wood, metal, glass, fabric, paper, clay, vehicle, bicycle, cement, rock, dough, horseshoes, plastic, wire, etc (needs to be safe for viewers).

The contest is open to individuals of all ages, businesses, organization, and families within the Clayton Ridge School District. Certain art pieces from outside Guttenberg's city limits will need to be displayed somewhere in the City of Guttenberg from June-September.
