Saunas are thought to have originated in Finland around 7000 B.C. The earliest known sauna structures were dug into the earth and lined with stone. Saunas have long been used for therapeutic and relaxation purposes and have been a part of traditional medicine for many centuries.

Infrared Sauna

A Sunlighten Amplify III Infrared Sauna has recently been added to the long list of health and wellness opportunities at Divine Current Wellness, located at 531 South First and Schiller Street in Guttenberg.

Unlike traditional saunas that use steam or dry heat to warm a room, infrared saunas use advanced infrared heaters to warm your body directly. As your body absorbs the infrared heat, this increases thermal energy, inducing a deep and relaxing sweat. "I wanted to add a holistic walk-in service for community members and tourists to the area," said Sadie Hefel, Divine Current Wellness proprietor, yoga teacher and massage therapist. "There is room for up to three individuals in the spacious unit."

Chromotherapy

The Amplify III delivers a unique full spectrum heat mix. "Sunlighten’s patented SoloCarbon far infrared heaters send high quality and quantity infrared wavelengths that penetrate deep tissue," Sadie explained. "The addition of Chromotherapy, or color light therapy, adds to the process of restoring balance to the body by applying color."

Chromotherapy lights are used to achieve wellness benefits on the premise that each color is associated with a different bodily response. Color has been used to treat all kinds of medical conditions dating back to ancient Egypt, India, China, and even as far back as the Mayan culture. Currently, the medical benefits of color light therapy are being investigated and implemented in hospitals and medical research centers worldwide. "Color therapy can be used to reduce swelling, decrease inflammation, for pain relief, accelerated healing, mood regulation, improved sleep patterns, relief of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and has anti-aging benefits, naming only a few," noted Sadie.

Personalized experience

Simple controls allow for easy temperature adjustments. "The infrared sauna is pretty simple to use. You can enjoy your healing pause in silence, or hook up your phone to the sauna's sound system and listen to your favorite playlist," commented Sadie. "You can wear whatever you like. Some people wear shorts, comfortable pants or leggings and a T-shirt, swimsuit or birthday suit — however you are most comfortable."

Sadie enlisted her talented husband, Jason, to create a private oasis. "Jason built an enclosed privacy shelving unit with a locking door for a peaceful secure environment," said Sadie. "There are towels available, but you can bring your own too."

Amplify III has a lower ambient air temperature that allows a more comfortable experience. It penetrates the body more deeply than a fast vigorous sweat. "Consistent use of the sauna has many health benefits. How often you use it depends on your goal," she added.

Sadie is excited to add this service, and has met the needs expressed by the community through its 2020 community survey. "We have crossed off all the boxes under health and wellness in the survey. The only thing we don't offer is a cooking class, which we haven't completely ruled out," she said with a big smile.
